1942 in Beijing, at the Qianmen Railway Station, Guo Yan, a scale operator and Communist Party member, skillfully protected his superiors under the leadership of the Jin-Cha-Ji Railway Work Committee of the Party. Betrayed by a traitor, Guo Yan was arrested, but after escaping, he adopted the alias Yan Fei. During his tenure as the station master of Xizhimen Station after being transferred from Zhengding Station, he completed the task of assisting our army in ambushing the Japanese military ammunition train through thrilling experiences such as burning the Japanese cotton warehouse, punishing traitorous collaborators, and sneaking into the secret of the Kamikaze locomotive.

Tian Zhanyi has had a lifelong passion for arts, particularly for quyi. In 1956, he apprenticed under the renowned xiangsheng artist Wang Shichen to learn xiangsheng performance. In 1968, he apprenticed under the celebrated pingshu artist Li Xinquan to learn pingshu performance, creating and performing short pingshu pieces such as "Green Firs in the Ocean," "Storms at the Platform," and others. He participated in numerous amateur competitions in Beijing and won awards. In 1978, he joined the Storytelling Troupe of the China Railway Cultural Troupe as a professional pingshu artist, simultaneously apprenticing under the famous pingshu artist Yuan Kuocheng. In addition to performing Yuan-style pingshu such as "Xiao Fei Buying Medicine," he also created and performed short pingshu pieces such as "A Thousand Miles of Speed," "The Lever," "A Thousand Miles to Deliver a Child," "The Globe," and "The Hook to Win."
Starting in 1982, he collaborated with Shen Yongnian and others to create long pingshu works such as "Secret Train," "Opium War at Humen Pass," "Lin Xiangqian," "Ming Dynasty Chronicles," "Mysterious Stories of the Forbidden City," "Seizing Treasures from the Great Wall," "Li Zicheng," "Top Secret Action," and new interpretations of ancient books such as "Comprehensive Mirror to the Past and the Present."
In recognition of Tian Zhanyi's achievements in narrating modern history pingshu, experts such as Wang Jingshou, Wang Jue, and Zeng Huijie wrote in the book "The Eastern Cultural Series: On Pingshu Art" in the section "Comments by Renowned Artists": "Tian Zhanyi is one of the most accomplished actors in narrating modern history pingshu in recent years."
