Patient's question:
The child has been born for 82 days. The child showed symptoms of hypothyroidism six days after birth, and the hearing test also failed. After taking medication, the second check showed no symptoms of hypothyroidism, but the hearing test results indicated that the left ear passed while the right ear did not. The third check failed completely.
Our whole family notices that the child seems to hear well and is very smart, but the tests still don’t pass.
Doctor's answer:
Hello, pure hearing screening cannot fully assess hearing levels. Therefore, infants and young children who fail the rescreening should undergo audiological and medical evaluations at 3 months of age. In addition to Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), assessments such as tympanometry and Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR) should also be conducted to evaluate hearing levels. When necessary, ear CT scans should be performed to assess the development of the middle and inner ear. Based on the evaluation results, intervention should be implemented within 6 months.
