Left kidney hydronephrosis with thinning cortex, pelvis shows 3.6cm fluid separation

Patient's question:

The baby is a girl, now 5 months old. On February 27, 2014, during the 25th week of pregnancy, the Yuncheng Maternal and Child Health Hospital conducted a screening for congenital anomalies and found that the child's left kidney was approximately 4.2cm x 2.5cm in size, with a renal pelvis separation of about 1.4cm. On March 31, the ultrasound section imaging report from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Xijing Hospital of the Fourth Military Medical University showed no obvious separation in the renal pelvis and calyx area, with a transverse diameter of 2.0cm in the left renal pelvis.

Doctor's answer:

The child was found to have left kidney hydronephrosis during pregnancy. Follow-up has shown that the hydronephrosis is worsening. It is recommended to perform an isotope renogram to assess the function of the affected kidney. If significant impairment of the left kidney function is observed, early surgery is advised to preserve renal function. Generally, the earlier the surgery is performed, the better the recovery of the child's renal function. Currently, surgical techniques for hydronephrosis caused by ureteropelvic junction obstruction are well-established, with a high success rate, typically exceeding 90%.
During daily observation, if symptoms such as fever, crying during urination, or other discomforts occur, a urinalysis should be performed promptly to rule out urinary tract infections.
