Features: This book, titled "The Unification System and the Rise and Fall of China," aims to highlight the significant reference value of historical experiences and lessons for the modern era. Through exploring the essential connection between the unification system and the rise and fall of traditional Chinese society, it uncovers the unique laws and operational mechanisms of traditional Chinese social development. By leveraging the great institutional culture created by the ancient Chinese people, it serves the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics, achieving a new leap from decline to rise in the history of the Chinese nation.
This book is guided by the basic principles of dialectical materialism and historical materialism in Marxism, applying relevant theories from Western new institutional economics, while integrating research findings from various disciplines such as political economy, management, sociology, political science, cultural studies, economic history, the history of science and technology, and philosophy. Through comprehensive and interdisciplinary research, it traces the origins, structures, characteristics, models, mechanisms, performance, imbalances, transformations, and failures of the unification system, offering a thorough, comprehensive, and systematic analysis of ancient China's history and its rise and fall.
The unification system discussed in this book specifically refers to the set of fundamental institutional systems in ancient China—political, economic, cultural, and technological—implemented from 221 BC when Qin Shi Huang proclaimed himself emperor to 1911 AD when the Xinhai Revolution overthrew the Qing dynasty. This spanned 2,132 years. At the core of this system was a state structure under a single emperor and government, which implemented unified administrative management over all ethnic groups within the entire territory of ancient China.
The author summarizes the history of China's unification system as follows: During its initial stages of creation, consolidation, and perfection, the system followed a path of rapid optimization, enabling ancient China to achieve prosperity that led the world. Around the 15th century, the unification system entered a state of balanced continuity along its original trajectory. While Western countries were accumulating strength and creating conditions for the Industrial Revolution and the capitalist system, China, constrained by the historical limitations of the unification system, advanced slowly within the framework of an agrarian society. By the late Qing dynasty, the system had become locked in a state of inefficiency, with contradictions among various social forces reaching an intense level. At this point, China could no longer continue along the established path. Having failed in the wars of imperialist invasion, China was forced to introduce exogenous variables and began to transform itself according to Western capitalist systems. Chinese society entered the modern development period.
Building on an analysis of the positive and negative aspects of the unification system's tradition, this book offers a preliminary examination of the historical experiences and lessons it left behind. It aims to help us observe and analyze contemporary issues with the mature perspective and profound insight of a nation with a 5,000-year history, enabling us to occupy a higher position in terms of national consciousness and accumulated experience compared to other nations. This, in turn, provides a new rational thinking approach and observational perspective for the future victory of the Chinese nation in the knowledge economy era and its overall strength.
The final conclusion of this book is that the greatest legacy of China's 2,132-year unification system is the spirit of national unity, ethnic solidarity, and social stability that the Chinese people uphold. This is the cultural core and soul of the Chinese nation, and we must fully recognize its significance. It is essential for us to carry forward the great cause of national unification and transform it into a powerful internal driving force for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
