Which newborns need retinal screening

Patient's question:

Which newborns need retinal screening

Doctor's answer:

The survival rate of low-gestational-week, low-birth-weight premature infants has gradually improved, and retinopathy of prematurity has become a threat to their vision. The retinal vasculature of premature infants is not yet fully developed, making them prone to retinal neovascularization and fibrosis. This condition often affects both eyes. In mild cases, it can resolve on its own, but in severe cases, it can lead to blindness due to complications such as retinal detachment. Research shows that the lower the birth weight and the smaller the gestational age, and the more the infant has a history of oxygen therapy, the higher the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity.
