Patient's question:

Quantitative test results for toxoplasma antibodies. 3. Is there a problem?

Doctor's answer:

≥1:32 is positive. ≤1:64 indicates past infection; 1:256 may suggest recent infection, 1:1,024 indicates current acute infection.
Dogs and other animals can be infected through routes other than the gastrointestinal tract, including damaged skin, respiratory tract, eyes, and placenta. Additionally, transfusion can also transmit toxoplasmosis.
The World Health Organization recommends a combination of pyrimethamine and sulfamethoxazole for treatment, with each course lasting one month and a one-month interval before the second course. The dosage is 2–4g of sulfonamide daily and 50mg of pyrimethamine daily, reduced to 25mg daily after two days. Since pyrimethamine is a folate antagonist, folate should be co-administered to prevent or reduce side effects. This drug can cause teratogenicity in fetuses, so pregnant women should use it with caution. Pregnant women and those with drug resistance can take azithromycin, three times daily at 1g per dose, with a 20-day course. Clindamycin can also be used.
