Features: This collection of 22 short stories aims to reflect the diverse styles of O. Henry's works from different perspectives and themes. O. Henry's novels primarily focus on the fates of "small people," such as workers, clerks, petty officials, artists, hobos, police officers, con artists, and even thieves. However, the author's approach and scope vary when depicting these characters. These works include heartwarming and heartbreaking love stories, such as The Gift of the Magi, The Furnished Room, and The Sacrifice; tales celebrating selfless loyalty between friends, like The Last Leaf and Friend Telemachus; stories criticizing the profit-driven brokers and treacherous dealings in the city, such as The Romance of a Busy Broker and The Path We Chose; and satirical accounts of soap magnates who believe "money is everything" and that "money can make ghosts push the mill," such as The. Some stories feature thieves with a shred of conscience, like The Marionettes; others portray impartial and fair-minded police officers, such as Twenty Years Later; some depict city hobos, like The Cop and the Anthem; others tell of vain hotel clerks, such as The Car Waiting; and some feature kidnappers who demand a ransom in return, like The Red Chief's Ransom. Additionally, there are stories that reveal the beautiful landscapes of the West, such as The Princess and the Peacock, and humorous tales that serve as wake-up calls, such as The Confessions of a Humorist. Among the most beloved are The Gift of the Magi, The Last Leaf, The Cop and the Anthem, and The Sacrifice. With a humorous touch and full of compassion, the author vividly portrays their misfortunes, joys, sorrows, and the shining light of love and humanity in adversity. Reading these works leaves one both laughing and crying, filled with awe.
