Features: Sun Li's life, aside from loving books, had no other hobbies. His late works were mostly essays of reading notes, which were well-written with a distinct style and character. Yet, he simply said, "I just feel that I am old and should speak some practical and easily understandable words. When selecting topics, one should have substance; when writing, one should be straightforward or concise." His late essays were often short in length but rich in meaning. "As I grow older, I believe that past deeds, the memories they bring, self-blame or self-pride, joy and sorrow, are true, reliable, honest and un-deceptive." I think he even deliberately aimed to write like Ouyang Xiu in terms of writing, "natural, simple, coupled with continuous exploration and refinement in art, making his essays so highly regarded at the time and respected by later generations."
