Midline of the brain

Patient's question:

I am from Xinjiang. Today, after my wife had an ultrasound, the doctor said: "The fetal brain midline is central, with 20 mm of irregular echo-free areas on both sides. Other areas are normal. It is recommended to follow up." Is this situation dangerous? Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

In this case, it should be stated how many months pregnant your wife is. If it is within 5 months and the midline of the brain is central with fluid on both sides, it could be normal. However, if there is still fluid on both sides of the midline after 5 months, it should be a cause for concern. Regular ultrasound examinations should be conducted to rule out the possibility of hydrocephalus. So, a central midline is not a problem, but if there is fluid on both sides, hydrocephalus should be ruled out.
