Hydrocephalus in children

Patient's question:

At the age of 5, we adopted a child who was born abandoned. The child is quite adorable and very smart, with no apparent abnormalities. However, recently the child has been constantly sick. They visited the hospital twice. The first time, the child vomited blood and underwent a examination, which revealed no significant issues. But less than two days later, the child vomited again and was taken back to the hospital for another check-up. The examination revealed a small amount of fluid in the child's brain, and it was unknown whether this would affect future development. We are particularly distressed.

Doctor's answer:

Analysis of the condition: Hello, pediatric hydrocephalus is a disease that causes head enlargement and brain dysfunction due to impaired cerebrospinal fluid circulation and increased intracranial pressure. It can be caused by various factors such as brain malformations, infections, bleeding, tumors, etc. The main symptom is "a large head." Typically, a newborn's head circumference is 33 to 35 cm, growing rapidly in the first half-year by 8 cm (approximately 42 to 45 cm), and then increasing by 3 cm in the second half-year (43 to 47 cm). If a child's head circumference exceeds this range and grows rapidly, hydrocephalus should be considered.
Recommendations: Currently, medication can be used to alleviate the condition of hydrocephalus, or surgical shunting can be performed.
