George Malley (played by John Travolta) is a fundamentally good-natured, ordinary auto mechanic who is well-liked in the small town.
But on the night of his 37th birthday, a sudden, intense burst of light strikes him, and from then on, George Malley's life is completely different. Not only does his IQ skyrocket, but his learning ability also becomes incredibly rapid and efficient.
He can move objects with his mind, predict earthquakes, and even decode Department of Defense satellite communications.
George's extraordinary powers soon attract scientists from all over the country to study his miracle, naturally, along with those who want his assistance.
As George Malley's superpowers grow stronger by the day, the townspeople begin to fear him and start to keep their distance.
Gradually weakened and isolated, George Malley, with the help of the town doctor (played by Robert DuVall) and his girlfriend (played by Kirstie Alley), discovers that George is suffering from a strange illness: each time he uses his superpower, he consumes a large amount of his life energy.
And at this point, George Malley has overused his superpowers, and his life is slowly coming to an end...
