Jerry Fletcher (played by Mel Gibson) lives in New York, working as a taxi driver, but his mind is often filled with fleeting memories. On a bustling street in the city, the female prosecutor Alice (played by Julia Roberts) encounters a robbery. At a critical moment, Jerry Fletcher comes to her aid, helping her retrieve the stolen property. However, soon after, any gratitude Alice might have felt for his help is washed away by growing frustration. Jerry, like a ghost, starts to stalk her. He frequently visits her office, spouting his "conspiracy theories"—such as the Vietnam War starting because of Howard Hughes, Hughes losing a bet to Aristotle Onassis, and the space center program being designed to cause an earthquake as a way to assassinate the President. All of this, in his eyes, is merely the product of some conspiracy, something almost non-existent in the mindset of ordinary people. To Jerry's nonsensical ramblings, Alice can only smile in dismissal. But when she discovers that Jerry is actually spying on her with a telescope, she finally reaches her breaking point.
