What is nephrotic syndrome?

Patient's question:

I really don't know anything about nephrotic syndrome. Looking at the name, there are two characters before "nephrotic," which makes me guess that it must be a disease. However, I'm still not very clear about what kind of disease it is.

Doctor's answer:

It is a syndrome that manifests in the glomerulus, a disease related to the increased filtration of plasma and proteinuria through the glomerular filtration membrane. Clinically, it is often characterized by the symptoms of "three highs and one low": massive proteinuria, hypercholesterolemia, edema of varying degrees, and hypoalbuminemia.
