Features: Syphilis was introduced to China during the Ming Dynasty and has a history of 450 years. Before the liberation, syphilis was rampant, with patients. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, after more than ten years of large-scale prevention and control, syphilis was basically eradicated on the mainland. In the 1980s, syphilis re-emerged, with one important reason being that many medical workers were unfamiliar with the clinical manifestations of syphilis, leading to frequent misdiagnoses and missed diagnoses, and there were few specialized books on syphilis. In view of this, Professor Long Zhenhua, a renowned expert in syphilis, invited 15 experts to write this book, "Syphilis," which comprehensively introduces the classification, clinical manifestations, examination methods, and treatment plans for syphilis. It combines theory with practice, making it easy to understand, aiming to improve the diagnosis and treatment levels of sexually transmitted disease prevention and control personnel and clinical physicians for syphilis, and to have a positive impact on controlling the spread of syphilis. Among the many diseases of sexually transmitted diseases, syphilis has a very wide prevalence range, and the harm it causes to patients' physical and mental health is also very serious. Before the discovery of penicillin, syphilis was one of the major diseases causing death and disability. In the history of medicine, syphilis was once listed alongside tuberculosis and leprosy as one of the world's three major chronic infectious diseases. The prevention and research of syphilis involve many fields of preventive medicine, clinical medicine, and social medicine. Therefore, syphilisology is, of course, an important branch of medical science, and controlling the spread of syphilis is of great significance for safeguarding people's physical and mental health, as well as an important task of medical epidemic prevention and control. Looking back at the history of syphilis prevalence in China, before the liberation, syphilis was prevalent to varying degrees in urban and rural areas and among some ethnic minority regions. After the founding of the country, through active prevention and control, significant achievements have been made in controlling and even basically eradicating syphilis, attracting worldwide attention. In recent years, with the increasing frequency of exchanges between domestic and foreign personnel, the rapid development of the tourism industry, the sharp increase in floating populations, and the resurgence of prostitution, sexually transmitted diseases have once again shown a trend of resurgence, with syphilis accounting for a considerable proportion and showing an increasing trend year by year. According to statistics from the National Center for Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Leprosy Control, since the first case of syphilis was reported again in 1979, the number of syphilis patients has gradually increased. Especially since 1993, the incidence of syphilis in many regions of the country has shown a significant rise. By 1999, the number of syphilis cases nationwide had reached 406,000, 40 times the number of cases in 1993, with an average annual growth rate of 85%. Moreover, congenital syphilis, as well as cardiovascular syphilis and neurosyphilis patients, have become increasingly common, and the situation is very serious. To improve the level and effectiveness of syphilis prevention and treatment, Professor Long Zhenhua, together with many professors and experts from Beijing University's Jishuitan Hospital, compiled the book "Syphilis." Professor Long Zhenhua has long been engaged in clinical and teaching work in dermatology and venereology, with rich experience in the diagnosis and prevention of syphilis, and is very familiar with the latest developments in syphilisology both domestically and internationally. In 1970, while working at the Institute of Dermatology of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, he first discovered a case of confirmed secondary recurrent syphilid (Beijing had already eradicated syphilis by 1960). Given that syphilis is a systemic disease involving various clinical disciplines, Professor Long Zhenhua invited many clinical and pharmacological experts to write relevant chapters, making the content of this book comprehensive, systematic, and practical, with theory closely linked to practice, making it indeed an extremely readable and highly practical reference book. I believe that the publication of this book will greatly benefit the prevention and control personnel of sexually transmitted diseases and medical staff in various clinical departments in the diagnosis and treatment of syphilis, as well as have a positive impact on controlling the spread of syphilis.
