He attended primary school but dropped out when the Cultural Revolution began and returned to his hometown. He worked as a temporary worker before enlisting in the army in 1976. In 1984, he was admitted to the Literature Department of the People's Liberation Army Arts Academy. In 1988, he entered the Master's Program at the Lu Xun Academy of Arts and Literature and later worked as a writer at the Creative Department of the General Staff Department of the People's Liberation Army. Currently, he works at the People's Procuratorate Daily. His major works include Red Sorghum Clan, The Republic of Wine, Big Breasts and Wide Hips, Red Forest, and Forty-One Guns.
