Female having children

Patient's question:

A 25-year-old female with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) has already given birth to a daughter at the age of 24 and is expecting another child. Can CHB be transmitted through mother-to-child transmission? What measures should be taken for the previously born child to prevent transmission? And what measures can be taken for the upcoming child to prevent transmission without it being spread through mother-to-child transmission? Thank you to kind people and experts.

Doctor's answer:

Hepatitis can be transmitted from mother to child. If the mother has chronic hepatitis B (), the child has a higher risk of being infected. It is recommended to take preventive measures for the child as early as possible. For the children you have already given birth to, if they have been vaccinated after birth, it is advised to check for the five hepatitis B markers. If there are no antibodies, they should be re-vaccinated with the hepatitis B vaccine.
Medical advice: For pregnant women, after giving birth, it is recommended to administer the hepatitis B vaccine and hepatitis B immune globulin within 24 hours. A second dose should be given one month later, and then the hepatitis B vaccine should be administered again at six months. This generally helps to prevent transmission.
Doctor's inquiry: Is your current alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level normal?
