Features: The Syllabus for the College English Test Band 8 (CET-8) was published in 1997. The syllabus has played an active role in standardizing the CET-8, establishing the authority, fairness, and scientificity of the test, and promoting teaching reform in English majors. In 2000, the Syllabus for English Teaching in Higher Education was implemented with the approval of the Ministry of Education. The 2000 edition of the syllabus proposed new requirements and standards for talent cultivation goals, curriculum design, teaching requirements, and teaching principles for English majors. To implement the 2000 edition of the syllabus, it was necessary to revise the 1997 edition of the test syllabus. Therefore, the English Group of the Advisory Committee on Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education was established as the Revision Group for the Test Syllabus at the end of 2002. The members of the Revision Group for the Test Syllabus included: Zou Shen (Shanghai International Studies University), Zhong Meisun (Beijing Foreign Studies University), Chen Jianping (Guangdong University of Foreign Studies), Qin Xiubai (South China University of Technology), Zhu Yongsheng (Fudan University), and Li Shaoshan (Luzhou Military Academy of Foreign Languages). Based on extensive research, the Revision Group for the Test Syllabus drafted a draft of the new test syllabus for comments in June 2003. After collecting opinions from nearly 100 institutions and experts from July to December, the Revision Group for the Test Syllabus revised the draft for comments. By the end of the same year, the Revision Group for the Test Syllabus discussed and approved the new CET-8 syllabus. In 2004, the English Group of the Advisory Committee on Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education reviewed and approved the test syllabus, and submitted it to the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and the Advisory Committee on Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education. The publication of the Syllabus for the College English Test Band 8 (CET-8) (2004 Edition) will help the Advisory Committee on Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education and the English Group understand students' English proficiency, check the implementation of the syllabus, evaluate teaching quality, and promote teaching reform.
