Patient's question:
NoDoctor's answer:
Neonatal scalp hematoma primarily occurs during difficult labor, forceps delivery, or vacuum extraction, and sometimes it can also occur during normal delivery. This is due to the rupture of subperiosteal blood vessels, where blood accumulates locally, forming a hematoma. It is commonly found on one or both sides of the top of the head. The hematoma protrudes above the skin, has clear boundaries, and varies in size but does not extend beyond the cranial sutures. Generally, it becomes gradually more apparent 2 to 3 days after birth, feels fluctuant upon palpation, and can gradually absorb and disappear, with the process lasting from several weeks to several months.
