What causes congenital lacrimal duct obstruction?

Patient's question:

Pediatric lacrimal duct obstruction

Doctor's answer:

Between the outer corner of the human eye and the nose, there is a pipeline system called the lacrimal duct. From top to bottom, the lacrimal duct is composed of lacrimal puncta, lacrimal canals, lacrimal duct, lacrimal sac, and nasolacrimal duct. Its function is to drain lacrimal fluid. Under normal, calm conditions, adults secrete 0.5 to 1.0 milliliters of lacrimal fluid every 16 hours. Except for moistening the eyeball and some evaporation, the remaining lacrimal fluid is drained into the nasal cavity through the lacrimal duct. The blockage of the lacrimal duct can occur at any location: including lacrimal puncta, lacrimal canals, lacrimal sac, and nasolacrimal duct.
