What is the purpose of pediatric hearing screening?

Patient's question:

Don't know what help the hearing screening has for newborns?

Doctor's answer:

Universal newborn hearing screening refers to: using objective physiological methods and subjective testing methods to screen the hearing of all live-born newborns. There are three purposes for this: First, to screen newborns and infants with congenital or neonatal hearing impairment during the hospital stay and at 42 days, so that infants suspected of hearing impairment can receive audiological and medical evaluations within three months after birth. Second, infants diagnosed with hearing impairment should receive intervention from healthcare professionals and specialized education personnel with expertise and skills in pediatric hearing impairment before the age of six months. Third, infants who show delayed or progressive hearing impairment should receive three years of audiological and medical testing, regardless of their initial hearing screening results, to enable early detection, diagnosis, and intervention.
