Features: In this collection of essays, except for a few popular articles, the content primarily involves research on urgent and long-standing unresolved issues in Chinese phonetics. Intonation and continuous tone rules are crucial aspects of Chinese phonetics research. For many years, due to the lack of effective research methods, they have remained two major challenges in the study of Chinese phonetics. Despite his advanced age, Professor Wu has remained at the forefront, tackling these two challenges. Since the 1980s, he has published a series of articles that integrate continuous tone rules and intonation analysis using modern phonetic methods. He proposed a new insight that intonation patterns are based on connected tone patterns as fundamental units, emphasizing the importance of the tonal variation rules of these basic units in intonation research.
