Features: Literary criticism is another form of creation. It discovers, appreciates, and evaluates good works, while questioning, opposing, and rejecting unhealthy ones. Especially the latter, appears more important and valuable in the present era. Excellent literary criticism provides responsible judgments, helping the public master reliable standards and methods for evaluating literary works, thereby ultimately fostering an atmosphere and environment conducive to literary development. It is precisely based on this understanding that the idea of compiling this "Essentials of Literary Criticism 2003" was born. "Essentials of Literary Criticism 2003" sets "essentials" as its standard, selecting literary criticism from the past year (2003)—because of the need for the topic, and also because a collection of literary criticism for this year has not been published before. Therefore, some insightful articles published in 2002 were also included. Among the selected articles, some are sharp in tone, and some viewpoints may seem biased, but in either case, what we need is healthy, mature criticism that is kind-hearted yet unyielding, vibrant yet not reckless. There are more articles that delve deeply into the problems in the works of writers like Wang Anyi and Chi Li because critics and readers have increasingly high expectations for their works, believing that their creations should trend toward refinement and guide people's behavior toward beauty and goodness. In past readings, the "highlights" in the novels of Wang Anyi, Chi Li, and others have largely obscured the underlying issues. Therefore, paying attention to their current creative status and studying the works of highly acclaimed and accomplished writers like Wang Anyi, especially exploring the problems in their works, should be regarded as essential work to address some negative phenomena in Chinese literary creation.
