What is the reason for twitching during sleep in children? Is it epilepsy?

Patient's question:

Yesterday, I went to a friend's house and saw their newborn child. The child is very young and mostly sleeps. It seems like the child twitches a lot while sleeping. The condition isn't very frequent, and the twitching doesn't look painful. There's no history of epilepsy in the family. I don't know if this could be epilepsy.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, when the child is sleeping, they may have twitching, but it is not epilepsy. The pre-epilepsy symptoms may manifest as smiling foolishly at people, unconscious grinding of teeth, aimlessly smacking the lips, habitual spitting, night wandering, and other "automatic" phenomena. During conversation, they suddenly don't understand what the other person is saying, or they suddenly hold chopsticks and freeze during meals, or even have poor memory and sleep problems.
