Scholar Ning Caichen travels to Guobei County to collect debts and, due to rain, is forced to stay at the legendary Orchid Temple. However, he is refused entry by the temple's Taoist priest, Yan Chixia, and sneaks in anyway. At midnight, Ning is drawn to the sound of a lute and encounters the young woman Nie Xiaoqian. Xiaoqian suddenly reveals a murderous intent, but is saved by Yan Chixia. Moved by his integrity, Xiaoqian develops feelings for Ning, but Yan tries to prevent their relationship. Ning mistakenly believes Yan is a killer with a cruel heart and plans to escape with Xiaoqian. The tree spirit forces Xiaoqian to kill Ning, but Xiaoqian, unable to bear it, orders all the demons to attack Ning and herself. Fortunately, Yan intervenes. Lao is severely wounded. Ning then realizes that Xiaoqian is a wandering soul, controlled by Lao because her remains were discarded in the wilderness. She must seek out strong men each night to feed Lao's Yang energy, which prolongs her life. To protect Xiaoqian from further torment, Ning agrees to take her ashes back to her hometown for burial. However, Xiaoqian is abducted by a stone demon from the underworld to be Lao's wife. Ning invites Yan to rescue Xiaoqian, but Yan reluctantly refuses. Yet Ning insists on rescuing her. After much hardship, Yan finally recovers Xiaoqian, allowing her to be reincarnated. This separation, however, breaks the bond between Ning and Xiaoqian.
