A dictionary is an important tool for learning English. Although we use various English-Chinese and Chinese-English dictionaries to study English, the sentences we learn are not the ones frequently used by Americans. Many sentences in dictionaries are grammatically correct, but Americans often find them confusing (surprising, isn’t it?). I’ve often been asked whether I could write a practical English dictionary based on the expressions used by contemporary Americans in everyday conversation. Many people have also suggested publishing a dictionary that allows for conversation using very short sentences. Inspired by these voices, I decided to compile this book.
For many years, I served as a lecturer for NHK TV’s popular program "Pocket English Conversation—Learn and Use in One Sentence." It was a very well-received program. This book was planned and written from the same perspective as the program’s teaching materials. In other words, this dictionary collects conversational expressions used by contemporary Americans that are clear in meaning. New words and expressions appear almost every day in the United States, though the same is true for Chinese. However, the changes in spoken English expressions are particularly noticeable. This book focuses on "modern American expressions frequently used today" and selects various spoken short sentences. Multiple American speakers were carefully consulted to confirm each sentence, and professors from the University of California, Irvine, also participated in this confirmation process.
As mentioned earlier, many dictionaries often list uncommon and obscure examples. However, this dictionary primarily includes concise and common basic expressions, allowing readers to effectively learn truly practical English expressions. We believe this is a dictionary unlike any other, covering the most vivid expressions currently used in the United States.
