Features: Young painter Harte takes a job as a tutor for the Fairlie family and encounters a woman in white on the way. Through their conversation, he learns she has escaped from a lunatic asylum. Out of sympathy, he helps her evade her pursuers. Harte discovers that his female student, Lona, resembles the woman in white. Before his death, Lona's father betrothed her to Sir Percival, but the knight was only interested in her vast wealth. He conspires with a traitor named Fox, a member of an Italian secret revolutionary group, to murder the woman in white, who knew the truth, and bury her body as Lona. Then, he sends Lona back to the asylum disguised as the woman in white. Overwhelmed by shock, Lona suffers from amnesia. Harte, who truly loves Lona, bravely steps forward to rescue her and expose Sir Percival's schemes.
