Features: This book, titled Modern Shanghai—A Hundred Sceneries of the International Hub in the 1930s, is a compilation of urban cartoons by Guo Jianying, a writer and cartoonist of the "New Sensibility" movement in the 1930s. It is divided into two parts:
1. Jianying's Cartoon Collection. This book was first published in June 1934 by Shanghai Liangyou Book Company, featuring over 200 cartoon frames. Some works are accompanied by humorous and witty text, and the entire collection is included here.
2. Outtakes. This section includes Guo Jianying's cartoons that appeared in Shanghai publications after the release of Jianying's Cartoon Collection, such as cover illustrations for magazines like Modern, Art Monthly, and Ladies' Pictorial, as well as illustrations for works by writers such as Liu Naoou, Hei Ying, Xu Chi, and Ou Waiou. It also includes two illustrations paired with text: On the Streets of Shanghai and A Cup of Yellow Manhattan Cocktail.
A preface titled The Lines of Modern Shanghai—Guo Jianying: His Life and Art by the editor is included at the beginning of the book, hoping to assist readers in appreciating Guo Jianying's cartoons and, in turn, experiencing the urban culture of 1930s Shanghai.
