Dietary Precautions for IgA Nephropathy

Patient's question:

Hello, may I ask what precautions are needed in terms of diet for IgA nephropathy?

Doctor's answer:

Hello
1. IgA kidney disease patients should eat light and easily digestible foods, avoiding seafood, beef, mutton, and spicy, irritating foods. Spices, coffee, coriander, etc. (especially for Yin deficiency IgA kidney disease patients, who should pay more attention to these taboos. The symptoms of Yin deficiency are as follows: red tongue, large pulse, night sweats, dry stools, hematuria, etc.); but for Yang deficiency IgA kidney disease, it is advisable to use warm foods. Yang deficiency symptoms include: pale tongue with white coating, deep pulse, cold body and limbs, loose stools, etc.
2. IgA kidney disease patients should eat fresh vegetables and a moderate amount of fruits, drink water appropriately, and avoid all tonics, supplements, and easily irritating foods. Such as chili peppers, lychees, chocolate, etc. Especially for Yin deficiency with internal heat, such as purple tongue, stagnant pulse, chest tightness, abdominal distension, and stasis symptoms, patients must remember these dietary taboos.
3. For IgA kidney disease patients with severe edema, salt should be avoided, protein intake should be limited, and water intake should be reduced. For mild edema, a low-salt diet can be followed. If there is no edema, there is no restriction on water and protein intake. For microscopic hematuria and those prone to internal heat, it is recommended to drink more water and eat nourishing Yin and cooling foods such as apples, white sugar, black sesame seeds, and black fungus.
4. IgA kidney disease patients with high blood potassium in uremia should avoid high-potassium foods. Such as bananas, oranges, potatoes, tomatoes, pumpkin, tea, soy sauce, and MSG. For patients with low blood potassium, the opposite applies.
5. IgA kidney disease patients with high blood uric acid should especially avoid animal organs, fish, shrimp, crabs, clams, beer, mushrooms, beans, and spinach.
