Can infantile spasms be treated with surgery?

Patient's question:

The birth of my daughter brought us great surprise. As I was raising her alone, she often cried and moved her hands and feet uncontrollably. At first, I thought she was hungry and fed her, but the problem persisted. So, I took her for a check-up, where they diagnosed her with infantile spasms.

Doctor's answer:

Infantile spasms are a form of epilepsy encephalopathy, and the vast majority of affected children do not respond well to drug treatment. Some parents choose surgical treatment for infantile spasms.
However, surgical treatment is not suitable for all cases of infantile spasms. Children must meet certain conditions to be eligible for surgery. The selection of cases suitable for surgical treatment is primarily based on the type of epilepsy seizures.
1. If the main seizures are nodding or falling, surgical treatment may be considered.
2. If brain MRI shows a clear focal lesion, surgical treatment may be appropriate.
3. If EEG examination reveals high synchronicity of epileptic discharges in both cerebral hemispheres, surgical treatment may be recommended.
4. Other symptom types are generally not suitable for surgical treatment.
