Why can't epilepsy patients drink a large amount of water at once

Patient's question:

My daughter has epilepsy. Once, she ate something quite salty and then drank a lot of water at once. The neighbor saw this and said that drinking so much water at once can easily trigger an epilepsy attack. She shouldn't do that anymore. Could you please explain why epilepsy patients should not drink a large amount of water at once?

Doctor's answer:

Drinking a large amount of water at once can obstruct breathing, causing oxygen deprivation in the head, which may trigger a seizure in people with epilepsy. It is recommended to drink small amounts frequently to avoid oxygen deprivation caused by prolonged drinking.
