Features: The people's mediation system is a legal system with Chinese characteristics. It is a grassroots self-governing activity conducted under the leadership of legally established people's mediation committees, based on the voluntary participation of the parties, in accordance with national laws, regulations, rules, and policies. Through persuasion, education, and patient guidance, it encourages the parties to reach mutual understanding and voluntarily agree on a resolution, thereby resolving disputes. People's mediation has a deep cultural tradition in China, and the public often turn to people's mediation committees to settle disputes over personal and property matters. Currently, people's mediation organizations across the country mediate over 6 million cases of civil disputes annually, including those related to marriage and family, neighborly relations, business operations, housing and land use, personal injury compensation, land contracts, and noise disturbances, which is roughly twice the number of first-instance civil cases handled by courts nationwide. The role of people's mediation in maintaining social stability has been recognized and supported by Party and government at all levels, and people's mediators are respected and beloved by grassroots communities. I have been engaged in guiding people's mediation work for many years and have visited grassroots people's mediators in 28 provinces (regions and cities) to understand their work and lives. More than 800 exemplary people's mediation committees and over 1,500 exemplary people's mediators, who have been commended by the Ministry of Justice, have been handled by me. I am deeply moved by the selfless dedication of the vast majority of people's mediators and impressed by the vivid and rich mediation methods and techniques they have created in practice. I have long wanted to compile and document their innovations to showcase the spirit of people's mediators to the world. China Legal Publishing House helped me fulfill this aspiration. When the editorial team approached me to explain their intentions, I was delighted and provided suggestions and opinions on the writing style of the book and the mediation knowledge, methods, and techniques covered, as well as participated in the final editing. The team members of the writing group worked very hard. Based on their summary of practical experience in people's mediation work, they analyzed and summarized the mediation methods and techniques used by mediators through specific and vivid case studies. The content is easy to understand, closely related to life, and relevant to mediation work, providing a lively and practical learning resource for people's mediators. I hope this book will help many mediators resolve difficult and complex disputes and find joy in both their work and lives through mediation.
