Features: Folk culture is a heritage culture, but if it cannot maintain a close connection with the real lives of the people, it would have beened by the public long ago. The study of folk culture, if detached from modernity, also loses its existence value. Therefore, when establishing a discipline of folk culture studies, its social benefits must be taken into consideration. The utility of folk culture studies, in general, can be summarized in two aspects:
First, preserving the existing folk heritage. The status of a nation in world history is determined by its national cultural tradition and the related mindset of its people. Our Chinese nation possesses a rich traditional culture, which not only played a positive role in the past but is still an indispensable part of the national civilization history knowledge for the broad masses of the people today.
Second, studying folk culture to understand the national conditions (including folk culture and the psychology of the people) to facilitate practical participation in current reforms. Only by correctly understanding the nature, functions, and other aspects of all folk cultures can we effectively promote outstanding folk culture and create new folk traditions.
