What should you do if you encounter a child having a seizure?

Patient's question:

Today I encountered a relative's child having a seizure, probably an epileptic attack. What should adults do at this time?

Doctor's answer:

When a child has a seizure, quickly lay them on their back without using a pillow. Place a gauze-wrapped tongue depressor (or a toothbrush handle) between their upper and lower teeth to prevent them from biting their tongue. Then, loosen their collar and turn their head to one side so that oral secretions can drain out naturally, preventing saliva from entering the airway and causing aspiration pneumonia.
