Pregnant at 24 weeks, fasting blood glucose 5.1, one-hour blood glucose 6

Patient's question:

Pregnant at 24 weeks, fasting blood glucose 5.1, one-hour blood glucose 6.6, two-hour post-meal blood glucose 5.8. Is this normal?

Doctor's answer:

The diagnosis of gestational diabetes is made between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy, through an oral glucose screening test with 50 grams of glucose and an oral glucose tolerance test with 100 grams of glucose. Blood glucose concentrations are measured at fasting, 1 hour after a meal, 2 hours after a meal, and 3 hours after a meal. If at least two of these values are higher than the standard values (fasting, 5.1 mmol/L; 1 hour after a meal, 10.3 mmol/L; 2 hours after a meal, 8.1 mmol/L; 3 hours after a meal, 6.7 mmol/L), then gestational diabetes is diagnosed. If only one value is higher than the normal value, then impaired glucose tolerance is diagnosed.
