Patient's question:
If you get diabetes in the year of Ren Chen, what are the symptoms?Doctor's answer:
Gestational diabetes specifically refers to diabetes that occurs only during pregnancy. Women who had diabetes before pregnancy do not have gestational diabetes but rather diabetes complicated by pregnancy. Gestational diabetes most often occurs in the middle and late stages of pregnancy. Pregnant women with any of the following conditions at initial diagnosis should be screened for diabetes:1. Family history of diabetes
2. Obesity (weight exceeding ideal body weight by 20%)
3. Previous delivery of an infant weighing over 4,500 grams
4. History of unexplained miscarriage or stillbirth
5. History of fetal abnormalities
6. History of unexplained neonatal death
7. Polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid)
8. Positive urine glucose test
According to World Health Organization (WHO) standards, individuals with the following conditions can be diagnosed with diabetes:
- Fasting blood glucose ≥ 7.0 mmol/L
- Peak blood glucose level during a 75-gram glucose tolerance test ≥ 11.1 mmol/L
For the diagnosis of gestational diabetes, a 100-gram glucose tolerance test should be used. If the following thresholds are met, gestational diabetes can be diagnosed:
- ≥ 10.55 mmol/L at 1 hour
- ≥ 9.16 mmol/L at 2 hours
- ≥ 8.05 mmol/L at 3 hours
During pregnancy, due to the use of different diagnostic criteria from those for the general population, the prevalence of gestational diabetes is quite high.
