Definition of gestational diabetes

Patient's question:

My wife is already 25 weeks pregnant. Previously, when I accompanied her to prenatal check-ups, everything was normal. But in recent visits, she came back and said her blood sugar was high, suggesting it might be gestational diabetes. If her blood sugar remains too high, treatment will be necessary.

Doctor's answer:

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a special type of diabetes. It refers to the presence of various degrees of reduced glucose tolerance or overt diabetes after confirmation of pregnancy, regardless of whether insulin is required or only dietary treatment is used, and regardless of whether this condition persists after delivery. The incidence of gestational diabetes is 1% to 6.6 per 1000. The domestic incidence rate is 40%. Since the introduction of insulin and the development of perinatal medicine, perinatal mortality has significantly decreased.
