Features: Hemocytology is a science that primarily studies medical basic theories involving hematopoietic organs, hematopoietic cell development, and hematopoietic regulation, as well as clinical and morphological diagnostic techniques for various blood diseases. With the rapid development of basic sciences and the continuous advancement of experimental techniques, the research content of hemocytology is constantly expanding and deepening. In particular, the development and application of high-tech methods such as hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell detection, immunocytochemical staining, cytogenetics and molecular biology tests, ultrastructural examination of cells, automated hemocytometry, and flow cytometry have transformed traditional hemocytology, which relied primarily on microscopic morphology, into a modern, multidisciplinary field (modern hemocytology). Today, blood diseases are relatively common and prevalent, and the foundation for their diagnosis and treatment lies in hemocytology examinations. By examining routine Wright-Giemsa-stained blood smears or trephine bone marrow smears, important clues about a patient's condition can be obtained. Based on this, additional tests can be conducted as needed to finally determine the diagnosis and treatment plan. It is evident how crucial morphological examination is. However, understanding the patterns of bone marrow hemocytological changes in blood diseases and their related conditions, especially the accumulation of experience in morphological judgment, requires long-term, repeated, and extensive observation of cases. This also necessitates continuous communication among relevant professionals. To this end, combined with the latest developments in bone marrow hemocytology in recent years and our accumulated experience and a large number of case specimens, we have compiled the Modern Hemocytology Atlas to facilitate reference learning and application for clinicians, clinical pathologists, and students of clinical medicine and laboratory medicine.
This book is divided into four parts:
Part 1: Hematopoiesis and Bone Marrow Hemocytology Examination
This part covers hematopoietic physiology, hematopoietic regulation, indications for bone marrow hemocytology examination, bone marrow sampling, examination content of bone marrow hemocytology, cytochemical staining, immunocytochemical staining, etc.
Part 2: Bone Marrow Hemocytology Examination of Common Blood Diseases
This part includes the blood and bone marrow findings of common anemias, leukemias, and related diseases, along with other chemical tests. Most sections are accompanied by typical cases to enhance understanding.
Part 3: Bone Marrow Hemocytology Examination of Less Common Blood Diseases
This part is organized by red blood cell diseases, white blood cell diseases, platelet diseases, and other conditions, featuring numerous rare and special cases.
In recent years, with the continuous emergence and clinical application of various types of fully automated hemocytometers and flow cytometers, hemocytology examination has entered a new era of automated analysis. Hemocytometers perform automatic counting and preliminary classification of blood cells, particularly their graphical changes and comprehensive analysis of multi-parameter results, which hold significant clinical importance for the screening of blood diseases and their related conditions. Flow cytometers analyze the physiological, biochemical, immunological, genetic, and molecular biological characteristics of bone marrow blood cells at the cellular and molecular levels, providing more objective scientific evidence for the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, prevention, and recurrence of blood diseases and their related conditions. This serves as an essential complement and refinement to hemocytometers and morphological examinations. Therefore, this book includes a fourth part—Modern Bone Marrow Hemocytology Analysis Techniques and Their Clinical Applications—covering the principles, structures, and clinical applications of the latest automated hemocytometers and flow cytometers. In addition to displaying the analysis parameters and graphical changes of various blood diseases on these automated instruments, it also includes Wright-Giemsa-stained images of blood or bone marrow smears to facilitate readers' understanding and application.
This book presents over 1,500 high-definition, full-color images and over 200,000 words, featuring the following characteristics:
1. It covers both the fundamental content of bone marrow hemocytology and its examination techniques, as well as recent advancements.
2. It includes a wide range of common diseases, as well as some newer and rarer conditions.
3. It provides a large number of conventional Wright-Giemsa-stained images of blood and bone marrow findings, as well as colorful graphical representations from modern automated hemocytometers and flow cytometers, matched with relevant Wright-Giemsa-stained images.
The microscopic color images in this book that are not labeled with staining methods are specimens stained with Wright or Wright-Giemsa mixed stains. Most images are magnified 100× or 10×, with a few at 20× or 40×.
This book is suitable for use by clinicians, clinical pathologists, blood disease laboratory technicians, and students of clinical medicine and laboratory medicine for medical treatment, teaching, and research. It can also serve as a reference book for professionals undergoing continuing medical education.
