What are the factors or causes of nosebleeds in children when they sleep? How should it be treated?

Patient's question:

Previously, there were also cases, but they were rarely seen. Test results: Not checked

Doctor's answer:

Children are most likely to experience nosebleeds between the ages of 4 and 10, and over 90% of them occur in the anterior-inferior part of the nasal septum. The anterior-inferior part of the nasal septum has a vascular network composed of arteries and veins. The mucosa here is thin, and the veins lack valves, which is medically referred to as the "easily bleeding area of the nasal cavity." Due to its anterior location, it is easily prone to bleeding when subjected to external force.
There are many factors or causes of nosebleeds, both local and systemic. Local factors include nasal trauma, anterior rhinitis, nasal foreign bodies, and nasal angiofibromas. Systemic factors include upper respiratory tract infections, aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenic purpura, liver cirrhosis, vitamin C deficiency, hemophilia, and leukemia.
When a child has a nosebleed, parents should not panic. They should have the child sit or half-sit with the head slightly tilted forward. Avoid lying the child down or tilting the head backward to prevent blood from entering the respiratory tract. If blood flows into the pharynx, coughing may worsen the bleeding. In this case, a cold towel can be applied to the head, and gentle pressure can be applied to the nasal wings with fingers for 3–5 minutes. Alternatively, sterilized cotton can be dipped in a 0.1% epinephrine solution or Yunnan Baiyao, packed into the nasal cavity for 10 minutes, and then gently removed.
To prevent indoor dryness, water can be sprinkled on the floor, or an air humidifier can be used to maintain a certain level of humidity. Encourage the child to drink more water, eat more vegetables and fruits, and consume nutrient-rich, light, and easily digestible foods to prevent deficiencies in vitamins C, B1, and B2.
A decoction of 30 grams each of fresh Shengdi, fresh white (Imperata cylindrica), and fresh Lugen can be prepared and taken once daily for 5 days. Alternatively, 250 grams of cleaned hollow vegetable can be mashed with sugar, mixed with boiling water, and consumed to promote heat-clearing and blood-cooling effects.
Applying golden penicillin or erythromycin ointment to the nasal cavity regularly can prevent dryness of the nasal mucosa. Additionally, it is important to break the child's habit of picking their nose.
The methods mentioned above are only for home first aid in case of nosebleeds. However, since there are many factors or causes of nosebleeds, and prolonged or excessive nosebleeds can lead to shock or even life-threatening conditions, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly for diagnosis and treatment to avoid delaying the condition.
