Chen Shou, the author of the Records of the Three Kingdoms, was a Western Jin dynasty historian. The Records of the Three Kingdoms is divided into three sections—Records of Wei, Records of Shu, and Records of Wu, totaling sixty-five volumes. The original text is relatively concise. During the Southern Dynasties of the Liu Song period, Pei Songzhi added annotations, extensively citing various sources to supplement a significant amount of historical material, which is what we see today as the Records of the Three Kingdoms. From Stories of Figures in the Three Kingdoms, you will encounter many familiar yet unfamiliar characters and stories, as some of these appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. However, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a fictionalized adaptation by Luo Guanzhong and is not historical fact—it is merely a story. This book, on the other hand, narrates only historical facts, presenting a true of history.
