Why do 1-year-old babies like to sleep on their stomachs

Patient's question:

My baby is one year old and sleeps on their stomach every night. I don't know why?

Doctor's answer:

Hello:
Baby sleep positions often change, and each position has its own characteristics. Sleeping on the stomach, also known as prone sleeping, has the following disadvantages:
In the womb, the fetus naturally adopts a curled position with the face and abdomen facing inward and the back facing outward. The face and abdomen lack the skeletal protection of the back and are more vulnerable to external injuries, making them more sensitive. This is the most natural self-protective posture. Many babies seem to have an innate preference for sleeping on their stomach, which is also based on this principle—protecting the body's most fragile parts. When sleeping deeply, they feel safer, making it easier to fall asleep and reducing fussiness, which is beneficial for the development of the nervous system.
When sleeping on their stomach, the stomach contents are less likely to flow into the esophagus or mouth, preventing vomiting. Instead, they move into the small intestine, which aids digestion and absorption.
Prone sleeping allows babies to be influenced by lifting their heads and chests, thereby exercising large muscle groups such as the neck, chest, back, and limbs. This is beneficial for training (tumbling) and crawling skills.
However, when sleeping on their stomach, babies' heads are heavy, and their neck strength is insufficient. If they cannot turn their heads or roll over freely, their mouths and noses may become blocked by pillows, towels, or other objects, leading to suffocation or even life-threatening risks. Pressing the chest and abdomen against the bed makes it difficult to dissipate heat, potentially causing an increase in body temperature or the development of (eczema) due to sweat accumulating in these areas. Additionally, their limbs and hands are less mobile.
As parents, you can learn about the advantages and disadvantages of each sleeping position and then flexibly apply this knowledge based on your baby's specific circumstances.
