W.Y. Hui on Poetry

Author: Yu Guangzhong

Features: Originally, the choice of discussing poetry with him was due to his unique experiences and background. First, he excelled in both poetry and prose, as Mr. Liang Shiqiu once remarked that he wrote poetry with his right hand and prose with his left, achieving a level of excellence unmatched at the time. Moreover, apart from poetry and prose, he was also a master of criticism and translation. Therefore, he possessed a special sensitivity and grasp of poetry. Second, he spent most of his life wandering and drifting. In his childhood, he was left in Sichuan, later left his hometown for Taiwan, traveled to the United States several times, returned to Taiwan, and then went to Hong Kong, only settling in Kaohsiung near his sixtieth birthday. This not only greatly expanded his creative horizons but also deepened his understanding and integration of Eastern and Western cultures, especially in literature, art, and insight. Third, he was one of the leading figures of modern poetry in Taiwan. His winding and creative psychology not only witnessed the development of modern poetry in Taiwan but also served as a microcosm of the evolution of modern Chinese poetry. In this sense, the Huifeng Series has become even more harmonious and substantial with his inclusion.
