Patient's question:
Half a yearDetailed medical condition and consultation purpose: The child is currently 111 cm tall and weighs 20 kg. At the age of three, they were 98 cm tall. They have grown particularly slowly this year and are noticeably shorter than their peers in kindergarten. They eat well but go to bed late, around 10 p.m. The parents are of medium height (164, 175 cm). Is it possible that sleep issues are affecting their height? Should they visit the outpatient clinic?
Doctor's answer:
Hello: The long bones of children and adolescents are only relatively hard in the diaphysis ( part), while the ends are composed of cartilage. During growth and development, these cartilages develop a center of ossification, gradually hardening, expanding, and thus increasing human height. Therefore, a person's height is closely related to the development of their bones. Regular physical exercise improves blood circulation, enhances the body's absorption of nutrients, and increases the growth capacity of bone cells, thereby promoting more vigorous bone growth and making bones thicker and stronger. As a result, children naturally grow taller. According to medical expert research, among children and adolescents of the same age and gender, those who regularly participate in physical exercise are, on average, 4–8 cm taller than those who are less active, with some differences even being greater. So, which sports activities are most effective for increasing the height of children and adolescents? The most effective exercises include the parallel bars, jumping, swimming, rings, gymnastics, basketball, and pull-ups. Jumping stretches muscles and ligaments and stimulates bone and cartilage growth; swimming provides full-body stretching and exercise; and pull-ups stretch the spine, promoting the growth of spinal vertebrae, thereby continuously increasing the height of children and adolescents.
