Woodblock printed book

Publish Date: 2003-08-01
Features: This series of books is written in various specialized volumes, including Song edition, Yuan edition, Ming edition, Qing engraved edition, ancient books of ethnic minorities, shop-engraved edition, family-engraved edition, movable-type edition, illustrated edition, and new literature edition, etc., striving to reflect the new style and level of our country's edition research. Of course, some people worry that this format might lack uniformity and may result in repetition. The editors believe there is no need to worry. The format is generally unified, but it is neither possible nor necessary to be as orderly as a textbook with clearly defined chapters. The editors recall that when they first entered the field of ancient book editions, they read various books such as Zhang Zhidong's Catalogue of Books Answered, Ye Dehui's Chu Lin Qinghua, Sun Yuxiu's Study on the Origin of Chinese Woodblock Printing, Ye Changchi's Chronicles of Book Collecting, as well as bibliographies and prefaces from various authors. It was truly a wide array of books—why be confined to a single format or framework? Yet, they managed to learn the art of edition studies. With ten or so volumes in the series, some repetition in the content is acceptable. For example, some may classify Mao Jin's Jigu Ge as a family-engraved edition, while others may consider it a shop-engraved edition. Each author writes from their own perspective, and insights vary. A bit of diversity is more interesting than a monotonous approach.
