Features: Pu Songling possessed extraordinary literary talent. He had tried his hand at various literary forms, including poetry, ci, prose, fu, and popular drama, achieving notable success in each. His passion lay in recording strange tales and writing stories about fox spirits, ghosts, and flower fairies. For scholars aiming to enter officialdom, this was considered an unproductive pursuit, and he had received both friendly advice and hostile ridicule for it. However, he did not succumb to societal prejudices, holding fast to the belief that "even if fame eludes, there is no cause for sorrow," and he persisted in writing until he was past sixty, gradually putting down his pen. Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio was the culmination of his life's work.
Pu Songling's creation of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio inherited the literary tradition of the Six Dynasties' ghost stories and the Tang Dynasty's romantic tales, yet it marked a qualitative leap in both concept and method. He broke free from the Six Dynasties' notion of recording strange events to "demonstrate the divine way," surpassing the Tang Dynasty's limitation of focusing on fantastical imagination and plot twists in romantic tales. Instead, he turned his attention to the real society, using life experience and reason to master the mysterious consciousness embedded in Six Dynasties' ghost stories and folk religious beliefs, as well as the story paradigms they formed, and engaged in literary creation. He, to critique reality, express his frustrations, and convey his personal experiences, tastes, and spiritual aspirations. In this way, the mysterious consciousness and thought patterns in the Six Dynasties' ghost stories were transformed into literary fantasy and material. Fox spirits, ghosts, and flower fairies were no longer entities of mysterious consciousness but became characters in fantastical literature; deities were no longer sacred figures in religious consciousness that could not be profaned but became allegorical representations of human officials or certain types of people, often carrying a critical tone.
By breaking free from the shackles of religious superstition, Pu Songling gained freedom and fully unleashed the artistic potential of the interplay between reality and fantasy, weaving many stories that were more magnificent, vivid, and imbued with life and realism than those in the Six Dynasties' ghost stories and Tang Dynasty romantic tales.
This illustrated edition is clearly more refined and meticulous than the illustrations in novels from the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The compiler, the owner of Guangbaizhai, stated: "The illustrations are a collection of works by renowned artists of the time. The towers, pavilions, landscapes, figures, birds, and beasts are all rendered to their best advantage. Each illustration captures the essence of the text, with laughter and anger vividly depicted." Although it may seem self-praising, the illustrations in the book are meticulously drawn with skilled techniques and harmonious compositions, ranking as a superior piece among the illustrations in vernacular novels of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is certainly beyond the ability of inferior hands to achieve.
The poems are likely written by the owner of Guangbaizhai. While it cannot be said that every poem perfectly captures the essence of the stories or reaches a sublime level, many of them, either directly or indirectly, convey the thoughts of Master Liaozhai with subtle elegance. Overall, they maintain a certain standard.
