Patient's question:

A one-month-old baby, what temperature is considered normal?

Doctor's answer:

Hello:
When newborns are first born, their body temperature (rectal temperature) is between 37.6℃ and 37.8℃. Due to their immature thermoregulation function and the generally lower environmental temperature, a newborn's body temperature drops significantly after birth. Within 30 minutes to an hour after birth, the temperature can decrease by 2℃ to 3℃, and then gradually return to fluctuate between 36℃ and 37℃.
Therefore, it is essential to pay close attention to the ambient temperature where the infant is located. For normal newborns, the room temperature should be around 33℃ in the first two days after birth and gradually decrease thereafter. For premature infants, the room temperature should be maintained at 34℃ to 35℃ in the initial period and then gradually lowered, with a slower rate of decrease compared to normal infants (as per medical advice). At the same time, the thickness of the infant's clothing and bedding should be appropriate to keep their hands and feet warm without causing sweating.
However, some newborns may experience what is known as "dehydration fever" or "sudden fever" within 3 to 5 days after birth. Their body temperature can rise to 39℃ to 40℃, often lasting several hours or even 1 to 2 days. The infant may also exhibit symptoms such as flushed face, dry skin, and restlessness. This is usually caused by insufficient fluid intake, excessively high room temperature, or overly thick clothing and bedding.
In most cases, the infant's body temperature will quickly return to normal after being fed more mother's milk or given warm boiled water. If the temperature remains persistently high after these measures, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
