Childhood astigmatism, insufficient hyperopic reserve, does it mean you will definitely become myopic in the future?

Patient's question:

A 5-year-old child who just turned 5 had a dilated eye exam at the hospital last month. Their uncorrected vision was 0.5 in the left eye and 0.6 in the right eye. They have myopic astigmatism with 125 degrees of myopia in the left eye and 150 degrees in the right eye. Their remaining myopia reserve is only 50. After correction, their vision improved to 0.7 in the left eye and 0.9 in the right eye.

Doctor's answer:

It is not recommended because the child is still young and the skin is quite delicate. If the monocular amblyopia is caused by neurosuppression, the black eye patch method is effective. Try to persist with it for as long as possible to consolidate the vision. If it is so-called hyperopic or myopic amblyopia, glasses are not needed. For details, please consult! If it doesn't work, it is recommended to wear glasses. Regular follow-up is necessary, and immediate treatment should be taken once any fluctuations in vision are detected!
