Features: Since its publication in 1978, the Chinese-English Dictionary has been widely welcomed by readers both at home and abroad. The revision work spanned 10 years, adding over 800 single-character entries and nearly 18,000 multi-character entries (including idioms, colloquialisms, proverbs, etc.). For polysemy involving both Chinese and English, supplementary explanations are generally added to entry definitions, and additional examples are provided, all sourced from renowned works. The entries have been comprehensively reviewed and adjusted to avoid repetition while ensuring ease of reference. The Chinese-English Dictionary was compiled over eight years by dozens of experts from Beijing Foreign Studies University under the of Chairman Mao Zedong and under the direct care of Premier Zhou Enlai, and was officially published in 1978. The revision has the following characteristics:
1. Broad word coverage: The dictionary contains over 80,000 entries, retaining all entries from the 1978 edition while adding 18,000 new ones, including a wealth of newly coined terms.
2. Rich examples: In addition to numerous examples of daily, academic, and professional language, the dictionary now includes literary examples, quotes from famous figures, and famous poems.
3. Reflects Chinese cultural traditions, with particularly detailed definitions of uniquely Chinese concepts.
4. Standardized Pinyin.
5. Accurate and reliable English: All entries and examples in the dictionary have been meticulously reviewed by Chinese and foreign experts in both languages.
6. Well-organized layout for easy reference and convenient use.
