Patient's question:
Recently, I've noticed that my child has been snoring while sleeping these past few days. I think it might be due to adenoid hypertrophy, and I want to consult a doctor. What are the symptoms of adenoid hypertrophy in young children?Doctor's answer:
Adenoid hypertrophy in children manifests as nasal congestion, snoring during sleep, excessive sweating, restlessness during sleep, sleeping on the stomach, or accompanied by symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as nose rubbing, eye rubbing, sneezing, and runny nose. Severe nasal congestion may not present with rhinitis symptoms, and some may have recurrent coughing, which could be caused by allergic rhinitis-bronchitis. Adenoid hypertrophy should not be surgically treated unless absolutely necessary. Adenoid hypertrophy should not be surgically treated under general anesthesia. Surgical removal of the adenoids, this main immune barrier organ, increases postoperative risks, including a higher likelihood of bronchitis, pneumonia, and asthma.
