The Risks and Aftereffects of Strabismus Surgery

Patient's question:

I would like to ask, can strabismus be cured with one surgery? I heard that it can recur as well.

Doctor's answer:

Strabismus surgery typically involves the use of a new adjustable suture technique for children, which generally ensures a high rate of postoperative alignment. However, if the child has lost binocular vision function due to strabismus and this function is not established promptly after surgery, long-term control of eye position may be poor, and there is still a possibility of re-deviation. We usually recommend that children with poor binocular vision function undergo relevant training after surgery to consolidate the therapeutic effect. Some children may still experience diplopia for a period after surgery, with some cases resolving naturally within a short time, while others may require recovery training.
