Among the world literature masterpieces of the 20th century, the one that can resonate with a generation is likely to be Roman Rollan's Jean-Christophe. As early as the 1950s, this book was the most borrowed at Peking University. By the 1960s, China launched an unprecedented "Cultural Revolution," criticizing the spirit of individual struggle in the novel. But strangely enough, after the ten years of chaos during the Cultural Revolution, at Peking University, this work became one of the required readings among thirty or so world literary masterpieces. This demonstrates the immense influence of the novel. Rollan also incorporated his own life experiences into writing this book; when readers read it, they can use their personal experiences to verify it, so this book, like the vast sound of a river, has spread worldwide. Rollan's heroes are not those who achieve victory through thought or force, but rather those with great souls and great characters. Great characters are often shaped through struggles with fate, both with the external world and also with the inner world.
